Uber Shuts Down In Uganda After A Decade In Kampala

Just in: this development broke today.

If you tried to book an Uber in Kampala today, you would have hit a dead end. The ride-hailing giant has pulled the plug on its Ugandan operations, wrapping up a chapter that started nearly ten years ago and quietly reshaping how thousands of people get around the city.

How It Happened

There was no long farewell tour — just a straightforward email to customers announcing the end. Uber’s message didn’t sugarcoat it: the company called it a “difficult” call, tied to a broader look at where it wants to put its resources going forward. As of September 2, 2026, the app simply stopped working for Ugandan users.

Not an Isolated Decision

Zoom out, and Uganda’s exit fits into a much bigger picture. On that very same day, Uber also walked away from Nigeria, closing out 12 years of business there. Add that to Tanzania (gone since February) and Ivory Coast (gone since last year), and a clear trend emerges — Uber is consolidating its African presence down to just four countries: Kenya, South Africa, Ghana, and Egypt.

There’s also a global dimension to this. Uber is currently trimming its workforce by around 3,300 positions worldwide, roughly a tenth of its staff. The African market exits appear to be one piece of that larger cost-cutting puzzle — even though the company insists it still sees long-term potential in the region overall.

Remembering How It All Started

It’s worth pausing on what Uber actually meant for Kampala. Back in 2016, it introduced something Uganda hadn’t really seen before: a smartphone app that could summon a ride, cutting out the guesswork and haggling that came with traditional special-hire taxis, which up to that point ran mostly on cash.

Two years later, in 2018, Uber took things further by rolling out uberBODA — putting motorcycle taxis on the app for the very first time anywhere in the world. For a country where boda bodas are practically a way of life, that was no small addition to the platform.

Why Now? Uber Isn’t Saying Much

If you’re hoping for a clear-cut explanation, you won’t find one. Beyond calling it the outcome of an internal “thorough review,” Uber has kept its reasoning vague. What’s not up for debate, though, is that the competitive landscape in Kampala looks nothing like it did in 2016 — plenty of alternative platforms have entered the scene since then and chipped away at Uber’s share.

The Clock Is Ticking for Current Users

For anyone still holding out hope, here’s the reality: support is available, but not forever. Uber says drivers have been notified directly, and its rider help desk will stay active for just 21 more days to sort out things like refunds and account issues. After that window closes, that’s it — no more fallback to lean on.

So Where Does That Leave You?

This is exactly the kind of moment where having a dependable transportation partner matters most — one that won’t vanish overnight because of a corporate decision made in another country.

That’s where Rent A Driver Uganda comes in. We’re not an app that can disappear with a single email announcement — we’re a reliable, professional private driver service built specifically for people who need consistency, whether that’s a regular work commute, an airport run, or getting around for a special event. Our drivers know Kampala’s streets, and we’re committed to being here for the long haul.

Ready for transportation you can actually count on? Get in touch with Rent A Driver Uganda today — because your travel plans shouldn’t depend on whether an app decides to stick around.
