Sheryl Bending Exciting Family Safari In Uganda With Gerard

A Canadian family discovers the Pearl of Africa with expert guide Byaruhanga Gerard

When the Bending family from Canada decided to embark on their dream African safari, they chose Uganda – often called the “Pearl of Africa” – for its incredible diversity of wildlife, stunning landscapes, and rich cultural heritage. With expert local guide Byaruhanga Gerard leading the way, their 14-day Uganda safari adventure would take them through some of East Africa’s most spectacular destinations, creating memories to last a lifetime.

Day 1: Crossing Borders – From Kigali to Kabale

The journey began with a scenic drive from Rwanda’s capital, Kigali, to the picturesque town of Kabale in southwestern Uganda. After settling into the comfortable Keishje Lodge, the family got their first taste of Uganda’s famous hospitality and began to adjust to the mountain air of this highland region. The anticipation for the days ahead was palpable as guide Gerard outlined the incredible experiences waiting for them.

Day 2: Lake Bunyonyi to Bwindi – Preparing for Giants

The morning brought breathtaking views of Lake Bunyonyi, known as the “Place of Many Little Birds.” The family marveled at the terraced hillsides and scattered islands before beginning their journey to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. Checking into Buhoma Forest Lodge, they could hardly contain their excitement – tomorrow would bring their encounter with the mountain gorillas. Gerard spent the evening briefing them on gorilla trekking etiquette and what to expect in one of the world’s most ancient forests.

Day 3: Face to Face with Mountain Gorillas

The highlight of any Uganda safari arrived on day three. After an early breakfast, the Bendings joined their gorilla tracking group for what would become the most memorable two hours of their lives. Deep in the misty forests of Bwindi, they encountered a family of mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. The experience of watching these gentle giants – some of our closest relatives in the animal kingdom – go about their daily lives left the family speechless. As they observed the playful juveniles and the magnificent silverback, time seemed to stand still in this magical moment that few humans ever experience.

Days 4-5: Queen Elizabeth National Park – Classic African Safari

The adventure continued as Gerard guided them to Queen Elizabeth National Park and their base at Engiri Lodge. Day five delivered the classic African safari experience the family had dreamed of. A three-hour morning game drive revealed elephants, lions, buffalo, and countless antelope species roaming the savannah. The afternoon brought the famous Kazinga Channel boat cruise, where hippos yawned lazily in the water while elephants came to drink at the shore. The two-hour cruise provided incredible photography opportunities and close encounters with some of Africa’s most iconic wildlife.

Days 6-7: Kibale Forest – The Primate Capital

After a scenic drive through Fort Portal with a delightful lunch stop at Garden Restaurant, the family checked into Top of the World lodge in Kibale Forest. Known as the “Primate Capital of the World,” Kibale delivered another unforgettable experience on day seven. The morning chimpanzee trekking expedition led by Gerard resulted in incredible encounters with our closest living relatives. The afternoon Bigodi community walk provided a perfect cultural counterbalance, allowing the Bendings to interact with local families and learn about traditional Ugandan life while contributing directly to community conservation efforts.

Days 8-9: Journey to Murchison Falls

The safari took on a more adventurous tone as the family traveled through Uganda’s heartland to Hoima, spending a restful night at Hoima Mika Eco Lodge. Day nine brought them to the mighty Murchison Falls National Park, where they settled into Bamboo Village Lodge, excited for what Uganda’s largest national park had in store.

Day 10: Murchison Falls – Where the Nile Begins

Murchison Falls National Park showcased Uganda’s diverse ecosystems perfectly. The morning game drive revealed giraffes, elephants, lions, and numerous antelope species across the vast savannah. The afternoon boat cruise to the base of Murchison Falls was equally spectacular, with hippos and massive Nile crocodiles visible along the riverbanks. The thundering falls themselves – where the entire Nile River forces itself through a 23-foot gap – provided a dramatic finale to an incredible day.

Day 11: Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary – Completing the Big Five

The journey to Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary marked an important conservation milestone. As Uganda’s only location where visitors can see wild rhinos, Ziwa represents hope for the species’ recovery in the country. The full day at the sanctuary, staying at Ziwa Lodge, allowed the family to track rhinos on foot and learn about the incredible conservation efforts bringing these magnificent animals back from local extinction.

Days 12-13: Jinja – Adventure Capital Finale

The safari’s final destination was Jinja, the adventure capital of East Africa and source of the mighty Nile River. After checking into their Victoria Falls Airbnb, the family prepared for their grand finale. Day thirteen delivered pure adrenaline with a full day of white water rafting and tubing on the Nile. Gerard ensured they experienced some of the world’s best rafting while staying safe on the famous rapids. The combination of stunning scenery and heart-pumping adventure provided the perfect end to their wildlife-focused journey.

Day 14: Departure – Taking Uganda Home

As the Bendings checked out of their accommodation and headed to the airport, they carried with them not just souvenirs and photographs, but life-changing memories. Under Gerard’s expert guidance, they had experienced the very best of Uganda – from intimate encounters with mountain gorillas to thrilling Nile rapids, from traditional community interactions to world-class wildlife viewing.

The Gerard Difference

Throughout their 14-day adventure, guide Byaruhanga Gerard proved invaluable. His deep knowledge of Uganda’s wildlife, culture, and conservation efforts enhanced every experience. His connections with local communities, understanding of animal behavior, and commitment to sustainable tourism ensured the Bending family not only had an incredible adventure but also contributed positively to Uganda’s conservation and community development efforts.
