The Uganda Tourism Association Partners with MTN Uganda
Kampala, Uganda — In a strategic move aimed at accelerating the growth of Uganda’s tourism industry, the Uganda Tourism Association (UTA) has partnered with MTN Uganda, the country’s leading telecommunications provider. This collaboration is set to leverage digital innovation and mobile financial services to enhance the tourism ecosystem, improve service delivery, and expand Uganda’s visibility as a premier travel destination.
The partnership was formalized during a high-level meeting in Kampala between UTA representatives and MTN Uganda executives. Central to the agreement is the integration of MTN’s mobile money payment platform, MoMo Pay, into tourism enterprises nationwide. This will simplify financial transactions for both tourists and operators, enabling seamless payments for accommodations, tours, event tickets, and other tourism-related services.
UTA President Yogi Biriggwa emphasized the transformative potential of the partnership, stating, “Tourism has the power to uplift communities and drive economic growth across Uganda. By harnessing MTN’s extensive digital infrastructure, we are unlocking new opportunities to modernize the sector and showcase Uganda’s unique attractions to the world.”

MTN Uganda’s CEO Sylvia Mulinge echoed this commitment, highlighting the company’s role in fostering digital and financial inclusion. “Our collaboration with UTA aligns with MTN’s vision to make services more accessible and efficient. We are proud to support tour operators, hotels, cultural institutions, and national parks in delivering enhanced experiences to travelers both local and international,” Mulinge said.
The partnership also includes joint marketing campaigns aimed at promoting Uganda’s diverse tourism offerings, from its renowned wildlife and national parks to cultural heritage sites. MTN has further cemented its role as a key stakeholder by becoming a corporate member of the Uganda Tourism Association.
This alliance comes at a pivotal time as Uganda’s tourism sector rebounds strongly from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. Recent statistics reveal a surge in international arrivals and domestic tourism, contributing significantly to the country’s economy and employment.
Herbert Byaruhanga, Vice President of the Uganda Tourism Association, welcomed MTN’s involvement as a catalyst for innovation. “Digital solutions are essential in today’s tourism landscape. MTN brings the technological expertise we need to elevate Uganda’s tourism industry to new heights,” he remarked.
By addressing challenges such as fragmented communication, cash-based transactions, and limited exposure of rural attractions, the UTA-MTN partnership is poised to usher in a new era of smart, inclusive, and sustainable tourism in Uganda. As global travelers increasingly seek immersive and tech-enabled experiences, this collaboration positions Uganda to compete effectively on the international tourism stage.
