🗓 Day 1 — Kampala City to Masaka (137 km | ±2.5 hrs)

Kick off your road trip from Kampala, Uganda’s bustling capital city. Before departing, take time to explore some of Kampala’s top landmarks — the Kasubi Tombs, Namugongo Martyrs Shrine, Owino Market, or the panoramic views from Kampala Hill. Your driver will collect you from your hotel and head south along the Masaka Highway, one of Uganda’s best-maintained roads. Stop for lunch in Masaka town, a lively commercial hub with great local restaurants and fuel stops. Masaka is also a gateway to the beautiful Ssese Islands on Lake Victoria — worth a detour if your schedule allows.

Overnight: Masaka or Lake Mburo area Recommended Stop: Lake Mburo National Park — Uganda’s smallest savannah park, home to zebras, hippos, impalas, and over 350 bird species. A 2–3 hour game drive here is an unforgettable addition to your itinerary.

🗓 Day 2 — Masaka to Kabale via Lake Mburo (230 km | ±4 hrs)

After an early morning game drive at Lake Mburo, continue southwest towards Kabale — Uganda’s highest town, nicknamed the “Switzerland of Africa” for its dramatic terraced hills and cool mountain climate. The scenery along this stretch of road is absolutely spectacular, with rolling hills, tea plantations, and roadside villages painting a vivid picture of rural southwestern Uganda. Stop at Igongo Cultural Centre near Mbarara for a fascinating insight into the ancient Ankole kingdom and its famous long-horned cattle. Arrive in Kabale by early evening and settle in for the night.

Dotted with 29 picturesque islands and surrounded by steep terraced hills, Lake Bunyonyi is the perfect place to slow down, take a dugout canoe ride, birdwatch, or simply breathe in the fresh mountain air. This is one of the most photographed and most loved destinations in all of Uganda, and many travellers say it alone was worth the entire road trip.

As evening approaches, head to the trendy Kiyovu or Nyamirambo neighbourhoods for dinner at one of Kigali’s outstanding restaurants, where you can sample traditional Rwandan cuisine or international dishes in a warm, vibrant atmosphere. Arrive in Musanze by mid-morning and check into your lodge before heading out for an afternoon visit to the Ellen DeGeneres Campus of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund — a world-class research and conservation centre dedicated to protecting mountain gorillas. 🗓 Day 7 — Gorilla Trekking at Volcanoes National Park

Day 7 is without question the highlight of the entire Uganda–Rwanda road trip — mountain gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park. Rise early and check in at the Rwanda Development Board briefing point by 7:00 AM, where expert rangers will assign you to one of several habituated gorilla families based on your fitness level and group size. The trek through the dense bamboo forest and volcanic slopes can take anywhere from one hour to five hours depending on where the gorillas are located on any given day, but the moment you come face to face with a family of wild mountain gorillas — watching them play, feed, and interact just metres away — every step of the journey becomes absolutely worth it. You are allowed one precious hour with the gorillas, a sixty minutes that most travellers describe as the single most powerful wildlife experience of their lives. Gorilla trekking permits cost USD $1,500 per person and must be booked well in advance through the Rwanda Development Board.

The drive from Musanze to Nyungwe passes through some of Rwanda’s most scenic tea-growing regions, with vast emerald green tea estates blanketing the hillsides in every direction — a perfect opportunity to stop, stretch, and take photographs. Arrive at Nyungwe by early afternoon and check into your forest lodge. Spend the rest of the afternoon on a gentle introductory nature walk with a park ranger, keeping your eyes open for the forest’s incredible birdlife — Nyungwe is home to over 300 bird species including the rare Rwenzori turaco and the great blue turaco.

Nyungwe is home to approximately 500 chimpanzees as well as 12 other primate species including the stunning black-and-white colobus monkey, which travel in troops of up to 400 individuals — the largest colobus groupings found anywhere in Africa. In the afternoon, experience the breathtaking Igishigishigi Canopy Walk — a suspension bridge walkway stretching 160 metres across the forest canopy at a height of 70 metres above the forest floor, offering unparalleled views over the treetops and across the surrounding mountains. It is an exhilarating, bucket-list experience that brings you eye-level with birds, butterflies, and the ancient forest ceiling.

Overnight: Nyungwe Forest area Activity: Chimpanzee trekking permit — USD $90 per person | Canopy Walk — USD $60 per person

🗓 Day 10 — Nyungwe to Lake Kivu & Departure (±60 km to Kibuye/Rubavu)

On your final day, make your way from Nyungwe to the shores of the magnificent Lake Kivu — one of Africa’s Great Rift Valley lakes, stretching 90 kilometres along the border between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Whether you base yourself at the laid-back lakeside town of Kibuye (Karongi) or the livelier Rubavu (Gisenyi), Lake Kivu is the perfect place to wind down after an action-packed road trip — with crystal-clear waters, dramatic green hillsides plunging to the shoreline, and a calm, almost Mediterranean atmosphere that feels worlds away from the safari trails and forest treks of the days before. Enjoy a relaxing boat cruise on the lake, visit one of the nearby islands, or simply sit at a lakeside restaurant with a cold drink and reflect on the extraordinary journey from Kampala to this breathtaking corner of East Africa. Your driver will then transfer you back to Kigali for your international departure flight, completing one of the most spectacular road trips the continent has to offer.
