Uganda Welcomes Eight White Rhinos from South Africa

Kampala, Uganda — Uganda’s conservation efforts received a major boost this week with the successful arrival of eight Southern White Rhinos from South Africa. The animals were flown in by charter and landed at Entebbe International Airport on Monday, December 8, 2025, at 2:30 a.m.

The rhinos—a balanced group of four males and four females—were donated by African Parks and were officially received by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA).

🦒 A New Home in Nakasongola

Immediately following their arrival, the rhinos were carefully transported to the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary in Nakasongola. They have been placed under mandatory quarantine and veterinary care for acclimatization before being fully integrated with the existing rhino population.

  • Arrival Date: December 8, 2025
  • Time of Arrival: 2:30 a.m.
  • Species: Southern White Rhinos
  • Gender Split: 4 Males, 4 Females
  • Destination: Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary

📈 National Population Reaches 59

This significant reintroduction has elevated Uganda’s total rhino population to 59, according to UWA. The balanced group of males and females is strategically intended to enhance genetic diversity and support the long-term growth of the population within the country.

Dr. Basil Ajer, Director of Tourism Development, who represented the Minister of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities, hailed the moment as a strong “vote of confidence in Uganda’s conservation systems and institutions.”

“We are optimistic about the steady growth of Uganda’s rhino population. This is a significant step in rebuilding and strengthening our conservation efforts,” Dr. Ajer stated.

🛡️ Reinforcing Conservation and Tourism

The initiative aligns with Uganda’s National Rhino Conservation and Management Strategy, which aims to secure the species for future generations and eventually re-establish rhinos across a broader range of the nation’s protected areas.

Furthermore, the addition of these rhinos is expected to enhance wildlife viewing, broadening Uganda’s appeal as a destination for authentic and responsible travel experiences, particularly in northern Uganda. The government and conservation partners emphasize their commitment to active protection and close monitoring of the expanded population.
