Meet Our Drivers: The People Behind Your Uganda Safari

Meet Our Drivers: The People Behind Your Uganda Safari

A Uganda safari is only as good as the person behind the wheel. Long before you spot your first elephant at Murchison Falls or lock eyes with a silverback in Bwindi, it’s your driver-guide who gets you there safely, keeps the mood light through hours on rolling murram roads, and turns a long drive into the first chapter of the adventure. At Rent A Driver Uganda, every driver on the team has come up through Kampala’s top driving schools, logged years — sometimes decades — of road experience, and built a personal map of the country’s parks, cities, and back roads that no app can replicate.

Here’s an introduction to some of the top Uganda safari drivers you might meet on your next trip.

Mugisha Rogers

Mugisha Rogers - Professional driver in Uganda

With more than a decade in the tourism and transport trade, Rogers Mugisha has built his name on reliability and warm customer care. He trained at Prestige Driving School and went on to study with the Uganda Safari Guides Association (USAGA), and today holds Class B and D1 permits. He’s fluent in English, Luganda, and Runyankole, and is equally at home behind the wheel of a 4×4 safari van, a Land Cruiser, or an executive sedan. One of his standout memories is guiding a group on a ten-day journey through western Uganda, taking in the wildlife of Queen Elizabeth National Park before tracking gorillas in Bwindi.

Phionah Asiimwe

Phionah asiimwe

Phionah brings a different kind of energy to the road — she’s one of the company’s dedicated female drivers, with more than five years of experience handling everything from compact cars to larger mini-vans. Clients booking airport transfers, wedding transport, or general road trips often request her specifically, drawn to the comfortable, attentive style she brings to every journey.

Nuwahereza Anthony

Uganda safari drivers

Anthony has clocked nearly nine years on Uganda’s roads, trained at Dembe Driving School and later with USAGA. He holds Class B and D1 permits and speaks English, Luganda, Runyankole, and Swahili. He’s particularly fond of western Uganda’s primate-tracking circuit — Kibale Forest and Bwindi — and has guided multi-day adventures through the region, comfortable in everything from Land Cruisers to pickups and Super Custom vans.

Allan Ategeka

A graduate of Dembe Driving School with additional USAGA training, Allan also studied mechanics at Kampala’s Automotive Training Center, so a breakdown on a remote stretch of road is rarely a problem he can’t solve himself. With six-plus years of experience and licenses covering several vehicle classes, he speaks English, Swahili, Luganda, Runyankole, Rutooro, and Rukiga — useful range for guests touring widely across the country. He’s driven everything from Land Cruisers and Rav4s to motorbikes, and has guided guests through a memorable thirteen-day adventure spanning several of Uganda’s national parks.

Mugerwa Meddie

Drivers communicate with tour guides in park

Meddie has more than twelve years of road experience and trained at Prestige Driving School, with enough mechanical know-how to keep a trip running smoothly without outside help. He’s fluent in English, Luganda, and Swahili, and has taken guests everywhere from Kampala and Jinja to Mbale and the national parks — including a recent outing to the Ziwa Rhino & Wildlife Ranch near Kampala, home to some of the country’s last white rhinos.

Herbert Musuza

Safari driver-guide in Uganda on safari

Herbert’s six-plus years on the road span both Uganda and Kenya, including the Maasai Mara, giving him a genuinely cross-border perspective. Trained at Divine Driving School with mechanical experience from Kiseka Garage, he holds licenses for sedans, SUVs, and minivans alike. One of his most memorable trips was an eleven-day Rwanda–Uganda safari — a rare single journey across both countries rather than the usual one-country itinerary.

Magambo Michael

Micheal with client in car

Michael is one of the most seasoned drivers on the team, with roughly two decades behind the wheel since training at Sulaiman Driving School in the late 1990s. His experience spans Uganda, Rwanda, and Kenya, and beyond safari guests he’s also driven business travelers, researchers, and VIP convoys. He’s comfortable in Land Cruisers, minibuses, saloon cars, and even luxury vehicles like the Mercedes Benz and Range Rover, and speaks English, Luganda, and Swahili.

Byaruhanga Gerald

Rent A Driver Uganda Header

Gerald is a professional safari guide and driver licensed through Uganda’s Ministry of Transport and the Uganda Driving License Authority. He specializes in wildlife-focused trips to destinations like Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, Queen Elizabeth National Park, Murchison Falls, and Kibale Forest, offering commentary on animal behavior and local culture along the way. His services extend beyond safaris to weddings, corporate travel, and custom multi-day itineraries, with a strong emphasis on coordinating smoothly with lodges and activity providers.

Kazarwa Shanice

Shanice is a passionate advocate for women behind the wheel and has spent more than six years driving across Uganda and Rwanda. Trained at J&K Driving School, she’s covered upwards of fifteen destinations including Kampala, Kigali, Jinja, Murchison Falls, Queen Elizabeth, Bwindi, Kisoro, and Lake Mburo. She speaks English, Luganda, Kinyarwanda, Runyankole, and some Swahili, and favors SUVs and 4x4s like the Land Cruiser and Rav4 for her tours.

Edward Kaddu

At 47, with an impressive 27 years of driving experience, Edward is one of the most senior members of the team. He’s handled long-term projects, business and VIP transport, and long-distance trips across cities like Jinja, Mbale, Soroti, Arua, and Gulu, plus parks including Murchison Falls and Queen Elizabeth. He speaks English, Luganda, and Swahili, and has a particular knack for working with senior travelers and clients who need a bit of extra attention and patience.

Alikamu Mutagobwa

Uganda safari with Arnold & Tyra driven by Medi Mugerwa

Alikamu has eight years of experience and trained at Premier Driving School, with further specialization through USAGA. Fluent in English, Luganda, Rutooro, and Swahili, he’s well versed in Uganda’s major safari circuits — Queen Elizabeth, Murchison Falls, Kidepo Valley, Bwindi, and Kibale Forest — and is comfortable handling a range of Land Cruiser models as well as vans. He recently guided a multi-generational family on a week-long Uganda safari that included a stop at Murchison Falls.

Arinaitwe Thomas

Tumuhimbise Edson

Thomas brings over a decade of experience driving across East Africa, equally comfortable in saloon cars, 4WDs, double-cabin pickups, and coaster buses. He holds a certificate in motor vehicle mechanics and has built deep knowledge of Uganda and Rwanda’s national parks through years of frequent travel. He speaks Swahili, Luganda, Runyankole/Rukiga, Rutooro, and English.

Tumuhimbise Edson

Edson has spent more than six years driving across Uganda and Rwanda, with a solid grounding in vehicle mechanics, defensive driving, and the East African highway code. Known for punctuality and easy client rapport, he handles everything from saloon cars to 4x4s, station wagons, and coaster buses, and speaks English, Runyankole/Rukiga, Luganda, Rutooro, and Swahili.
