Britam Eases Car Insurance Costs With Monthly Payments

Britam Uganda has launched a new motor insurance initiative called the Car-Tono Katono Campaign, aimed at making comprehensive vehicle cover easier to afford by letting customers spread their premiums into smaller instalments rather than paying the full amount at once.

Although motor insurance is legally required for all drivers in Uganda, most motorists have historically stuck with basic Third Party cover. A major reason for this, insurers say, is the upfront cost of full annual premiums for comprehensive plans — a burden that strains both household and business budgets.

Under the new campaign, customers can pay for comprehensive cover monthly, quarterly, semi-annually, or on a schedule tailored to their finances. By removing the need for one large lump-sum payment, Britam hopes more drivers and fleet owners will be able to access broader vehicle protection.

Announcing the initiative, Britam Insurance Uganda’s CEO Allan Mafabi said the goal was to shift how Ugandans think about paying for motor insurance. He noted that many people end up paying heavily out-of-pocket for garage repairs after accidents, and that Car-Tono Katono is designed to make comprehensive cover accessible before those emergencies happen. He added that insurance shouldn’t feel like an annual financial shock, but something as manageable as any other regular bill.

The campaign also introduces an AI-powered vehicle inspection tool accessible via WhatsApp. Drivers can now inspect their vehicles remotely using their phones, buy cover, and manage policies digitally — a process that once required in-person inspections and took days, now reduced to minutes.

Britam is running the initiative with two key partners: GTBank, which is providing Insurance Premium Financing so customers can spread payments over time, and NxtPe, which powers the digital payment and policy management experience.

The insurer stressed that flexible payments don’t mean reduced protection — once a policy is active and payment terms are met, customers receive full comprehensive coverage for the policy period, per standard terms and conditions.

The launch comes as Uganda’s vehicle population keeps growing, alongside rising demand for flexible, tech-enabled financial products. Britam says it will continue exploring partnerships to make comprehensive motor insurance more accessible across the country.
