Duration: 4 Days / 3 Nights Route: Kampala – Kibale Forest – Kampala Distance: ~330 km each way Difficulty: Moderate Best Season: June–August & December–February Vehicle: 4×4 Safari Land Cruiser with professional driver-guide

Overview

Kibale Forest National Park in western Uganda is the undisputed chimpanzee capital of the world. Home to over 1,500 chimpanzees and 12 other primate species, it offers one of Africa’s most thrilling and intimate wildlife encounters. This 4-day itinerary by Rent A Driver Uganda takes you deep into the forest, along scenic crater lakes, and through the lush highlands of Uganda’s west — with a trusted driver-guide handling every kilometre so you can focus entirely on the experience.

Day 1 — Kampala to Kibale Forest National Park

Theme: Departure day — road journey through the western highlands

6:30am — Hotel pickup in Kampala Your Rent A Driver Uganda driver-guide arrives at your Kampala hotel in a comfortable, well-maintained 4×4 safari vehicle. After a short pre-trip briefing covering the route, safety, and what to expect over the coming days, you depart westward out of the city.

8:00am — Scenic drive through the western highlands The road from Kampala heads through Mubende and on toward Fort Portal, passing through rolling green hills, banana plantations, and the dramatic foothills of the Rwenzori mountain range. Your guide will make a roadside stop at a local market where you can pick up fresh passion fruit, jackfruit, and roasted groundnuts for the road.

12:30pm — Lunch stop in Fort Portal Fort Portal is the nearest major town to Kibale and serves as the gateway to Uganda’s western tourism circuit. Stop at a recommended local restaurant for a relaxed lunch. Your guide will share stories about the Tooro Kingdom, which is historically centred in this region, and point out key landmarks around town.

2:30pm — Arrival at Kibale & lodge check-in Drive the final stretch south from Fort Portal to the Kanyanchu sector of Kibale Forest National Park. Check in to your chosen lodge — options range from comfortable budget bandas to well-appointed mid-range forest lodges. The afternoon is free for rest, an optional nature walk on the lodge grounds, or birding along the forest edge.

7:00pm — Dinner & pre-trek briefing Dinner at the lodge. Your driver-guide walks you through the chimpanzee tracking briefing: what to wear, how to behave in the presence of the chimps, what the trail conditions are likely to be, and how to get the most from tomorrow’s experience. Early night recommended — tracking starts at dawn.

Overnight: Lodge near Kanyanchu, Kibale Forest

Day 2 — Chimpanzee Tracking & Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary

Theme: The main event — into the forest with the primates

6:00am — Early breakfast & transfer to the park A light but energising breakfast at the lodge before your guide drives you the short distance to Kanyanchu visitor centre. Here you join your Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) ranger and any fellow trekkers for the morning tracking session.

chimpanzee tracking in Kibale forest

7:00am — Chimpanzee tracking, Kibale Forest This is the experience that draws travellers from across the world. Led by an expert UWA ranger, you enter the forest on foot, following the trail of Kibale’s habituated chimpanzee communities. Depending on where the chimps have moved overnight, the trek can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 3 hours. Along the way you may encounter red colobus monkeys, L’Hoest’s monkeys, grey-cheeked mangabeys, and an extraordinary variety of forest birds.

When you find the chimpanzees, you spend one full hour in their presence — watching them feed, groom, play, and call across the canopy. It is a genuinely humbling and unforgettable encounter. Kibale’s chimpanzees are highly habituated to humans, meaning they carry on their natural behaviour largely undisturbed by your presence.

Tracking permit: $200 USD per person (bookable through Uganda Wildlife Authority in advance).

12:00pm — Packed lunch in the forest Your lodge will have prepared a packed lunch to enjoy in a forest clearing at the end of the trek. Few meals feel as earned or as memorable as this one.

2:00pm — Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary walk A short drive from Kanyanchu brings you to Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary, a community-managed conservation area on the edge of the park. A guided walk of 2–3 hours through papyrus swamp, riverine forest, and open grassland is outstanding for birdwatching — over 200 species have been recorded here, including the Great Blue Turaco, African Grey Parrot, and numerous kingfishers. Primates, mongooses, and occasionally hippos round out the afternoon’s sightings. Entrance fees go directly to supporting the local Bigodi community.

6:30pm — Return to lodge, dinner & rest Return to the lodge for dinner. Share the day’s highlights with your guide over a meal. The skies above Kibale on clear nights are spectacular — well worth stepping outside after dinner for some stargazing before an early rest.

Overnight: Lodge near Kanyanchu, Kibale Forest

Day 3 — Crater Lakes Circuit & Optional Queen Elizabeth Extension

Theme: Scenic highlands, volcanic lakes & savannah wildlife

7:30am — Crater lakes scenic drive After breakfast, your driver-guide takes you on the breathtaking crater lakes circuit south and west of Fort Portal. This landscape of ancient volcanic craters — many filled with deep green water and ringed by terraced gardens and papyrus — is one of Uganda’s most photogenic and least-visited regions. Key stops include Lake Nkuruba (a peaceful community campsite on the rim), Lake Nyinambuga, and a viewpoint over the expansive Lake Katwe salt flats.

10:30am — Optional: Queen Elizabeth National Park game drive For travellers wishing to add a big game experience to the itinerary, Rent A Driver Uganda can arrange a morning game drive in the Kasenyi plains of Queen Elizabeth National Park, just 90 minutes south of the crater lakes. This is prime savannah habitat where lions, elephants, Uganda kob, buffaloes, and warthogs are commonly seen. The famous tree-climbing lions of the Ishasha sector can also be included with an early start. This is an optional add-on and should be arranged in advance.

1:00pm — Lakeside lunch Enjoy fresh Nile tilapia or local Ugandan dishes at a restaurant overlooking one of the crater lakes. A relaxed, scenic midday break in a truly special setting.

3:00pm — Afternoon at leisure, Kibale Return to your lodge for a free afternoon. Options include a guided forest nature walk, a visit to a nearby community cultural centre, coffee plantation tour, or simply relaxing on the lodge veranda listening to the sounds of the forest.

7:00pm — Final dinner at the lodge Your last evening in the forest. Celebrate the trip over dinner and pack your bags in preparation for the return journey tomorrow.

Overnight: Lodge near Kanyanchu, Kibale Forest

Day 4 — Kibale to Kampala, Return Journey

Theme: Departure day with en-route cultural stops

7:00am — Breakfast & lodge checkout Final breakfast at the lodge before checking out. Your driver-guide loads the vehicle and reviews the return route, including any stops you would like to make along the way.

8:30am — Departure: Kibale to Kampala Begin the return drive northeastward toward Fort Portal and onward to Kampala. Your guide will suggest two excellent en-route stops:

Amabere ga nyina mwiru caves - Fort Portal
  • Amabere Caves & Waterfalls (near Fort Portal) — a fascinating geological site of stalactite caves, small waterfalls, and a lake with deep cultural significance to the Tooro Kingdom. A short guided walk of around 45 minutes.
  • Tea estate viewpoint along the Mubende road — sweeping views across manicured tea plantations that carpet the rolling hills between Fort Portal and the central plateau.

12:30pm — Lunch en route Stop at a recommended roadside restaurant along the highway for a relaxed lunch break midway through the return journey.

4:30pm — Arrival back in Kampala Your driver-guide delivers you safely back to your Kampala hotel or onward to Entebbe International Airport, depending on your travel plans. End of safari. Your guide will assist with any onward logistics or recommendations for your remaining time in Uganda.
